Fellows Active in Tsunami Response

In the weeks since the tsunami disaster in South and Southeast Asia, members of the Eisenhower family have been active in relief response in a variety of ways. Among those Fellows engaged are Trustee Rudy Pesik ’90, Indonesia, who has been appointed to coordinate the logistics of national relief distribution in his country; Mihir Bhatt ’00, India, head of the Disaster Mitigation Institute, who is working in affected areas in his own country and also traveled to Sri Lanka to consult on response and prevention methods there; and Nivard Cabraal ’00, Sri Lanka, whose information shared with EF Trustee and GlaxoSmithKline CEO J.P. Garnier inspired the latter’s Sri Lanka CEO to announce an increase in its already planned donation of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.

Announcing the 2005 Eisenhower Fellowships Conference

The 2005 Eisenhower Fellowships conference, “Asia in the World,” hosted by the Singapore Fellows, will be held at Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel June 26-29. Plenary and break-out session topics include:

  • America and Asia’s Emerging Order
  • Cultures and Globalization in Asia
  • New Issues for Business in Asia
  • Youth and Values in Asia and the West
  • Islam in Southeast Asia and the World
  • Sustaining Cities in Asia
  • Growing Asia’s Global Companies
  • Strategies for Eisenhower Fellowships Regional Networks

Play Bac Celebrates 20 Years

This month François Dufour ’98, France, celebrates the 10th anniversary of his paper Mon Quotidien and the 20th anniversary of his company Play Bac, which publishes the paper. Mon Quotidien is the only newspaper for children in the western world and has a circulation of nearly 200,000. In addition to his roles as President of Play Bac and Editor of Mon Quotidien, Dufour has recently become a journalism instructor at l’Ecole de Journalisme de Sciences Po.

Philadelphia City Council honors EF

Councilman Ramos, Councilman Nutter, Diane Melley, Councilwoman Tasco, President John Wolf, Della Clark, David Hyman, and Gail Harrity.

The Philadelphia City Council presented a resolution honoring Eisenhower Fellowships for 50 years of achievement in developing international, national, and local leaders at its December 16 meeting. On hand to receive the award were President John Wolf and Philadelphia Fellows Diane Melley '01, Della Clark '02, Gail Harrity '02, and David Hyman '02.

“Recognition by the city of Philadelphia is a particular honor for Eisenhower Fellowships,” said Wolf, “because it is here that the organization has made its home. In the coming years, we look forward to continuing to introduce leaders from the Philadelphia region to the world, and leaders from around the world to Philadelphia.”

Award Winning Strategic Plan

Ted Abernathy ’01, USA, Executive Vice-president of the Research Triangle Regional Partnership (RTRP), received the Regional Competitiveness Excellence in Economic Development Award for RTRP’s action plan, Staying on Top: Winning the Job Wars of the Future. The award, given by the U.S Department of Commerce, honors the five-year, $5 million plan to create 100,000 jobs and boost employment in the Research Triangle region as best regional strategy in the United States in 2004.

Business Conference Slated for February

The Pennsylvania Economy League East, headed by David Thornburgh ’00, USA, has joined with Microsoft to organize the Philadelphia Innovation Conference, to be held February 23, 2005 at the Philadelphia Convention Center. The conference will bring together business and thought leaders from around the country to share ideas on achieving profitable growth through innovation.
