Fellow Receives Rey Jaime Award From Spanish King
Alfonso Vegara, ‘87, Spain, received the Rey Jaime I Award in the category of Sustainability, Landscape and Urbanism, which is granted by the Fundación Rey Jaime I de Valencia. The award recognizes the strategic role of the cities in the challenge of building a sustainable future. Vegara, president of Fundacion Metropoli, was awarded based on the research carried out in the Fundacion Metropoli since its foundation, the development of the Project Cities Initiative, and its findings, which were summarized in the book Territorios Intelligentes. The awards ceremony award took place in Valencia and was presided over by His Royal Majesty the King Juan Carlos I, who is shown at left presenting Vegara with his medal.

Organizers, International Conference on Financially Self-Sufficient Schools
Paraguayan Fellows Martin Burt, ’94, and Guillermo Peroni, ’70, co-founders of Teach a Man to Fish organization, recently held the first International Conference on Financially Self-Sufficient Schools. Other Paraguayan Fellows involved included Raul Gauto, ’89, and Pascual Rubiani, ’99. The conference gathered more than 140 participants from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Australia. Singapore Fellow Participates in Conference Planning
Lim Soo Hoon, ‘02, Singapore, is one of the principal event organizers of a World Cities Summit in Singapore on June 23-25, 2008.
With the theme "Livable and Vibrant Cities,” the summit is an international conference series focused on effective public governance and sustainable development of cities. The summit is organized by the Singapore Civil Service College and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. Amongst the invited speakers are two Eisenhower Fellows - Alfonso Vegara, ‘87, Spain, president of Fundacion Metropoli; and Simon Tay, ‘02, Singapore, chairman of the National Environment Agency in Singapore. Recipient, Japanese Government Award
Jerry Ellis, ’83, Australia, was honored with a Japanese Government Award, The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star. Ellis has had a long association with Japan (over 30 years) through his roles at BHP (CEO BHP Minerals and Chairman), President of the International Copper Association, a member of the Australia-Japan Business Cooperation Committee, Chancellor of Monash University, Chairman of the Australia-Japan Foundation, and a member of the Australian Committee of the Australia-Japan Year of Exchange.

Organizer, Euro-Mediterranean Network on Migration and Mental Health
Driss Moussaoui, ’89, Morocco, organized the Euro-Mediterranean Network on Migration and Mental Health in Lyon, France, in conjunction with mental health workers from nine different countries. The event was held on November 17, 2007. Moussaoui was also recently elected as a member of the French Academy of Medicine, and as president-elect of the World Association for Social Psychiatry during the 19th World Congress of Social Psychiatry in Prague.

Tan Chin Nam, ’95, Singapore, has retired from his position as permanent secretary, Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, after 33 years of distinguished service in the public sector. He has taken the position of chairman of the Media Development Authority and will fill other roles in the private sector as well. |

Speakers, DLD Conference
Marc Samwer, ’03, Germany, is a speaker at the DLD (Digital, Life, Design) Conference, January 20-22 in Munich. The DLD covers innovation, science, and culture, and brings together thought leaders from Europe, the Middle East, America, and Asia. Samwer is co-founder and managing director of the European Founders Fund, a venture capital and private equity firm.
Christiane zu Salm, '06, Germany, was also a speaker at the DLD Conference. Zu Salm is founder and CEO of About Change Ventures (ACV).

Eisenhower USA Fellow on NBC Nightly News
John Della Volpe, a 2008 Eisenhower Fellow, explained the impact of the youth vote on the US presidential primaries during a segment of NBC Nightly News broadcast nationally on Sunday, January 13.The Director of Polling for Harvard University’s Institute of Politics, John focuses on the impact of new media, Web 2.0 and the Millennial Generation (12-30 year olds) on international politics and business. His Eisenhower Fellowship this year will permit him to broaden his knowledge through meetings in China, where he has been invited to speak to the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE), and in Korea, where he will be the first USA Fellow to travel to the country on an Eisenhower Fellowship.

Recipient, Medal of State Honor
Dr. Bolormaa Tumendemberel, ’08, Mongolia, was awarded the Medal of State Honor for the Diligent Labor for the contribution to the compact signing between the Government of Mongolia and the United States. Mongolia will receive a grant for US$285 million, which will support the economic development and poverty reduction in Mongolia through the Millennium Challenge Account. Dr. Tumendemberel will arrive for her Eisenhower Fellowship in March 2008 as part of the Multi Nation Program. |
