Announcing Worldwide Eisenhower Day of Fellowship

In collaboration with Fellows around the world, Eisenhower Fellowships (EF) is pleased to announce its first annual “Eisenhower Day of Fellowship” in commemoration of EF’s founding on October 14, 1953, in Hershey, PA. In the subsequent 55 years, EF has fostered the development of some 1,700 leaders globally.

To commemorate their fellowship, Eisenhower Fellows will sponsor events including policy forums, lectures on President Eisenhower’s legacy, and panel discussions on the current U.S. presidential election. In several countries, the Fellows will also launch a formally chartered national Eisenhower Alumni Association.

Observance of EF Day is widespread across the Eisenhower network in 19 cities in 15 nations.

Join Us to Celebrate the Living Fellowship
We encourage all Fellows to commemorate their Fellowship by joining in this extraordinary effort throughout the month of October. Fellowship forums, gatherings, and presentations will be held on:

  • October 7 in Washington, DC: reception at the Embassy of Peru hosted by Ambassador Felipe Ortiz (MNP ’96)
  • October 10 in Philadelphia, PA: panel presentation, “The Future of Science and Technology,” with Philip Yeo (MNP ’87) of Singapore and EF Trustee Constantine Papadakis, followed by reception
  • October 11 in Research Triangle, NC: “Opinion Leaders” reception and October 14 in Research Triangle: transportation-themed presentation and lunch
  • October 13 in Mumbai, India: workshop on energy and transportation followed by dinner and launch of new Eisenhower Alumni Association of India
  • October 13 & 14 in Jakarta, Indonesia: launch of Eisenhower Alumni Association of Indonesia at dinner with EF President John Wolf and morning seminar on the 14th
  • October 14 in Singapore: forum on U.S. presidential elections featuring EF President John Wolf
  • October 14 in the Philippines: dinner celebration and launch of Eisenhower Alumni Association of the Philippines with EF Vice President Dan Geisler
  • October 14 in Buenos Aires, Argentina: ICANA hosting discussion and reception. ICANA president Enrique Pinedo (MNP ’57) will speak about President Eisenhower
  • October 14 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: dinner celebration and launch of Eisenhower Alumni Association of Brazil

  • October 14 in Taipei, Taiwan: 35th anniversary of Fellows Association celebration at dinner, President of China, Taiwan (invited) and EF Director of Alumni Network Diane Shoemaker
  • October 18 in Ankara, Turkey: luncheon with President Suleyman Demirel (MNP ’54) speaking about President Eisenhower 
  • October 28 in Mexico City, Mexico: roundtable discussion on the impact of U.S. elections on U.S.-Mexico relations with senior officials and EF President John Wolf
  • Date TBA in Prague, Czech Republic: special meeting and discussion
  • Date TBA in Colombo, Sri Lanka: an essay/speech day on "Ike and his Presidency" involving students from international and regional schools

Malaysia Conference Previewed in New Straits Times

An article titled "Asia's Best to Gather for Eisenhower Forum" was published in the New Straits Times today:

"Some of the best brains in the world will converge here next month to thrash out several of the most pressing issues of the day. The four-day regional Eisenhower Fellowship conference, to be held in the country for the first time, is on the theme 'Asia -- Connect for a Better World.'"

ICANA Reelects Fellow for Two More Years as President

Enrique Pinedo, '57, Argentina, was reelected as president of ICANA (Argentine-North Aermcan Cultural Institute) for another two-year term. Pinedo reports, "The last three presidents, including me, were Eisenhower Fellows: the late Dr. Armando Braun, '64; Dr. Alberto Mondet, '65; and myself, the first Argentine Fellow in a long list of almost 50. Now, although not completely retired from my law firm, I dedicate most of my time to ICANA, to my historic studies at the Argentine Academy of History and to my ranch in southern Buenos Aires Province."

German Fellow Invites USA Fellow to Speak at Medienwoche

John Della Volpe, ’08, USA, recently gave a keynote address at Medienwoche (Media Week), held August 29 through September 5 in Berlin. Della Volpe was invited by Germany Fellow Dr. Miriam Meckel, ’08, who acted as a moderator during the session. Medienwoche featured more than 15,000 participants, making it one of the largest industry gatherings of its kind in Europe. Also participating in the congress as a panelist was Christiane zu Salm, ’06, Germany, head of Cross Media, Hubert Burda Media.

Zimbabwe Fellow Named CEO of SADCAS

Maureen Mutasa, ’02, Zimbabwe, has taken a new position as Chief Executive Officer of the Southern African Development Community Accreditation Services(SADCAS). SADCAS is a regional accreditation body offering accreditation services to testing and calibration laboratories, certification bodies (management systems, product, and personnel) and inspection bodies in the whole SADC region. She is now based in Gaborone Botswana.

Mutasa was previously director general of the Standards Association of Zimbabwe.

Brazil Fellow Appointed to WIEGO

Sonia Maria Dias, '07, Brazil, is now affiliated with Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO) as a sector specialist. WEIGO is a global research-policy network based at Harvard University that seeks to improve the status of the working poor, especially women, in the informal economy.

Sonia visited WIEGO during her Eisenhower Fellowship to discuss her work with waste pickers in Brazil.  These meetings were so fruitful, and they were so impressed with Sonia’s work, that they asked her to join their organization.

YahyaIndonesia Fellow Named Director of Ceremony, First Asian Beach Games

Tantowi Yahya, ’05, Indonesia, has been appointed by the National Sport Committee and Coordinating Minister for Welfare as director of ceremony of the first Asian Beach Games in Bali. Yahya will head the team of more than 2,000 people responsible for the opening and closing ceremony, which will be attended by the Indonesian President and other heads of state. Forty-five Asian countries will take part in this "mini-Olympics."

Yahya is also managing director of P.T. Ciptadaya Prestasi; chairman of the Indonesia - America Friendship Association; and a member of the Board of Directors for the Indonesian Sound Recording Association.

Fellow Receives Honorary Doctorate

Professor Joyce O’Connor, ‘89, Ireland, has received an Honorary Doctorate from the Higher Education and Training Council in Ireland for her contribution to education and to public service. O’Connor is chair of the Digital Hub in Dublin and President Emeritus of the National College of Ireland. Said O’Connor, “I was honored to be nominated and to accept.”

Also receiving honors at the ceremony were Joe McGarry, recently retired Secretary General of the Institutes of Technology Ireland and Former Head of School in Institute of Technology, Tralee and lecturer in Waterford Institute of Technology; Catherine McGuinness, Chair of the Irish Universities Quality Board (IUQB) and President of the Law Reform Commission; Nuala O’Loan, First Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland; and Peter Williams, Chief Executive of the Quality Assurance Agency.

kunstler goldmanFellow Named to IRS Committee on Tax Exempt Organizations

Karin Kunstler Goldman, '96, USA, was recently appointed to the Internal Revenue Service's Advisory Committee on Tax Exempt Organizations (ACT). The ACT provides an organized public forum for the IRS to receive regular input on exempt organization and employee plan policy. The advisory committee consists of external stakeholders and their representatives who are appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury for two-year terms.

Kunstler Goldman is an assistant attorney general in the Charities Bureau of the New York State Department of Law, where she has a wide range of responsibilities in the oversight of tax-exempt entities. She is a past president of the National Association of State Charities Officials (NASCO) and has been active in conducting educational seminars for officers, employees and volunteers of exempt organizations throughout the New York.

Kuala LumpurMalaysia Conference: Register by September 15

Eisenhower Fellows from Southeast Asia and around the world will meet in Kuala Lumpur October 15-18, 2008, to attend Asia - Connect for a Better World, a regional conference organized by the Eisenhower Fellows of Malaysia.

The conference will examine links between Asia and the rest of the world in the age of IT and globalization. Topics of dicussion include Trade and Capital Flows; Toward a Safer World; and Sustainable Development. Also on tap are walking tours of Petaling Street, Masjid India, and the Central Market.
